Experience a piece of history

In 1939 when the National Park Service hired Stanley Thompson to design and build what he later called “the mountains and ocean” course, he told friends that it was the best contract he ever had. He was given one of the country’s most scenic and awe inspiring national parks, and had just one mandate: take advantage of it. The result is an inspired piece of architecture that has proved to be one of Thompson’s finest design achievements.

After traveling through the Cabot Trail, we were taking our time driving back to our room in Baddeck and decided to stop at the Keltic Lodge for some coffee and see the view. The Keltic Lodge sits on a strip of land that juts out into the water on a high bluff. It offers excellent views overlooking the water on both sides.

We enjoyed a leisurely Irish coffee sitting on the patio outside the dining room and enjoyed our view. It looks like a very nice place to stay, but we were just driving by and decided to stop for a break. The service was very friendly and accommodating and we did not have to be a guest to enjoy a coffee.

We spent 2 nights here during our drive of the Cape Breton Trail. I had seen this place in a television program and had wanted to visit for a few years. We stayed in one of the main lodge rooms and really loved it. We had a nice view that was something to wake up to. The room was fairly large and had all the required amenities. The bed was very comfortable and the wifi worked well. The staff here are just great all throughout the complex.

Breakfast, included, was exceptionally good with lots of choices. The best part was being able to walk all around the area and take in the amazing views. If you enjoy hiking, this is the place to be. We had dinner one night in Arduaine restaurant with its views over the sea. The food here is very good and priced reasonably. Also, there is live music here every night. This place has so much character, reminds you of days gone by and encourages a relaxing holiday enjoying nature.

On the drive up you get your first view of this majestic lodge on the high cliffs overlooking Ingonish Beach. Once you arrive the views in all directions are stunning. Check-in went smoothly. Our room had contemporary furniture and a stunning view. As the main lodge is as was built there are no balconies. One has to remember this is an eighty year old lodge so, you will hear doors closing and conversations from the hallway.

The complimentary breakfast was awesome with eggs Benedict and a variety of hot meats. There are red Andorack chairs throughout the grounds for relaxing and taking in the views. We found our stay very relaxing and the location was a great place to take in the Cabot Trail and return to for the evening. We would definitely return and strongly recommend to others.
